The Deputy Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, has pledged Shs1 million towards the completion of a community Madrassa school in Mujini Cell, Sironko Town Council, Sironko District.
Waiswa made the pledge on Saturday, September 5, 2026, during the annual Maulid celebrations at Mujini Mosque, where Muslims gathered to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The Madrassa, which currently has two classroom blocks, is intended to provide children in the area with access to Quranic and Islamic education in a safe and conducive environment.
The appeal for support was made by Muslim elder Hatibu Muzee, who presented a memorandum to Sheikh Waiswa, who represented the Mufti of Uganda, Dr Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, as the guest of honour.
Muzee said the community was struggling to complete the school because of limited resources, adding that children currently have to walk long distances to access Islamic education.He said the situation exposes learners to exhaustion and safety risks and called on Muslim leaders and well-wishers to support the completion of the facility.
Responding to the appeal, Sheikh Waiswa pledged Shs1 million towards the construction project and said he would also organise a return visit to Sironko with the Mufti to engage with the local Muslim community but aurged Muslim
The Deputy Mufti also used the occasion to call on Muslims to make Maulid celebrations meaningful by promoting good deeds, unity and peaceful coexistence with people of other faiths.
“We need to teach good things, no abusing each other. Our predecessors used such events to spread Islam and bring people together and this is how other faith converted,” Waiswa said.
The celebrations, organised by the Sironko Town Council Twale administration together with the Muslim community of Mujini Mosque, were fully sponsored by Hajji Abdallah Difee.
The event attracted Muslim leaders like regional assistant Mufti, District Khadhi’s, politicians, non-Muslims , Muslim from different parts of the country,like Tororo, Busia, Soroti, Nabilatuk and Moroto,Jinja, Bugir and others
Mujini Mosque has organised Maulid celebrations for decades, with records showing that the tradition dates back to around 1930.Difee thanked the Muslim leaders, politicians and worshippers who travelled from different parts of the country to attend the event.
“Someone can organise an event and people refuse to come, but I thank God for what you have shown me because a function is meaningful when people attend,” Difee said.
He said the gathering was not merely a celebration but an opportunity for Muslims to remember Prophet Muhammad and reflect on his teachings.
