UVTEB Assures Technical Institutions on New Curriculum.

Technical and vocational education and training institutions have been assured that programmes whose curricula have not yet been reviewed under the new TVET law will continue operating using the existing curricula.

Officials from the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) and the TVET Council say the arrangement is intended to ensure training continues without disruption as institutions adjust to the requirements of the new law.

Orchard Ochwo, the Principal Curriculum Specialist in Charge of Training and Assessment at UVTAB, told institutions not to worry about areas still awaiting review. Speaking at a five-day training of VET institutions on Monday at Elgon Technical College–UTC Elgon in Mbale City, Ochwo said the board has now rolled out the new curriculum.

Under the TVET Act 2025, UVTAB is responsible for developing and managing TVET curricula in consultation with Sector Skills Expert Committees and TVET providers, subject to approval by the TVET Council. Although the law requires all taught courses to run on Council-approved curricula, officials say not everything can be reviewed at once β€” priority was given to programmes whose curricula had already expired or fallen due for update, meaning trainers in those fields were, in effect, teaching to a syllabus the industry had already moved past.

Edgar Robert Rugoogamu, the UTC Elgon Academic Registrar, explained that reviews are prioritised on the basis of necessity rather than working through every programme at once. He said the institution is ready to implement the new curriculum beginning October 2026.
