Mbale — Islamic University in Uganda has commenced a three-day staff training workshop aimed at strengthening competence-based education in line with national standards set by the National Council for Higher Education.

The training, which started on April 9 and will run until April 11, 2026, is being held at the university’s main campus in Mbale. It has brought together directors of campuses, deans, heads of departments, and examination coordinators.

Held under the theme “Institutionalised Competence-Based Education in Higher Education: Values Integration, Innovation, and Strategic Repositioning at IUIU,” the workshop seeks to equip academic staff with practical skills in designing competence-based curricula aligned to NCHE minimum standards.

Participants are being trained in key areas such as the development and assessment of competency maps, drafting Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), and designing curriculum structures with appropriate credit units and notional hours.

The workshop also includes sessions on competence-based teaching and learning strategies, assessment frameworks supported by rubrics, and the formulation of internship and integration project plans. Additionally, participants are exploring curriculum alignment matrices to ensure coherence between learning outcomes and assessment methods.

The initiative is expected to strengthen curriculum development processes at the university and reinforce its commitment to delivering quality, innovative and competence-driven higher education.
