The Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) has strengthened its partnership with the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) through an initiative aimed at promoting financial literacy, environmental conservation and a better learning environment for students.
The initiative, held on August 20, 2026, at the IUIU Main Campus, saw DPF commission 20 concrete garden benches for students to use for discussions, relaxation and learning outside the classroom. The Fund also donated more than 500 tree seedlings for planting around the university campus.
Speaking during the event, DPF Director of Communications Patrick Onen Ezaga urged students to improve their financial literacy and exercise caution when handling their money.
Ezaga said “Students should avoid online scams, Ponzi schemes and sports betting, which can lead to the loss of tuition and savings,”
He encouraged students to keep their money in regulated financial institutions rather than trusting schemes that promise quick wealth.
Ezaga also advised students to open bank accounts, save responsibly and keep their personal information updated with their banks.
“Keeping your personal information updated with your bank is important because it helps ensure that your money can be traced and protected when necessary,” he said.
On environmental conservation, Ezaga said the donated tree seedlings were part of DPF’s efforts to address environmental degradation and the effects of disasters in the Bugisu region. “Tree planting should become a regular practice in our communities,” Ezaga said.
Representing the IUIU Rector, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Dr. Jamiru Sserwanga thanked DPF for the support, saying the benches and tree seedlings would improve the university environment.
“The benches and tree seedlings have improved the university environment and provided students with more space for discussions and leisure,” Dr. Sserwanga said.
Dr. Sserwanga said the partnership was also helping students gain knowledge about deposit protection while creating opportunities for internships and future collaboration between IUIU and DPF.
He further cautioned students against carrying large amounts of cash and falling victim to schemes promising quick returns.
Dr. Sserwanga advised, “Students should use secure financial services and make wise investment decisions.”
The two institutions pledged to continue working together to promote financial awareness, environmental protection and student development.
