Hope has been restored for hundreds of people in Forua, Adjumani District following the launch of a free cataract surgery camp by DIRECT AID SOCIETY.
The medical camp, implemented in partnership with the DIOPTA EYE CARE CENTER and the Adjumani Municipal Health Team, kicked off today and is targeting 350 patients who will receive free eye treatment and surgery.
The launch was presided over by Director Nourelhoda Elaagab Abdalla Mohamed and was witnessed by Mr. Toko Swaibu, the Resident District Commissioner of Adjumani. A team of specialist doctors led by Dr. Kalinaki Abubakar from DIOPTA EYE CARE CENTER are conducting the surgeries on the ground.
Speaking at the launch, Director Nourelhoda said the intervention was necessary because cataract treatment remains too expensive for many families.
“We are here in Adjumani for a very important activity. We are conducting cataract surgeries for free. By offering it for free, we help people get back to their work. Because vision is very important,” he said.
Dr. Kalinaki Abubakar explained the impact of cataracts on daily life:
“If someone does not see well, they cannot move on with their lives. Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness. With surgery, a person can regain their vision and return to work.”
RDC Toko Swaibu thanked DIRECT AID SOCIETY for returning to Adjumani just 6 to 7 months after their last visit.
“Adjumani is hosting more than 250,000 people. Many of our youth are in their active working age. If they lose sight, they cannot perform well. This support is a big boost to the district and to the health sector of this country,” the RDC said.
Director Nourelhoda also appreciated district leaders for their support and pledged continued intervention.
“We pledge that, Inshallah, we shall do our best to help our communities. This is not the last time we will be here. We will come again,” he said.
DIRECT AID SOCIETY reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to quality health services for vulnerable communities across Uganda, with more camps planned in other districts after Adjumani.
