KAKIRI, WAKISOIn a bid to combat the growing burden of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Uganda, Raising Hope International Friends (RHIF) has conducted an intensive sensitization and screening exercise at Assahaba Islamic Centre in Kakiri, Wakiso District.

The outreach, held under their theme Time to Take Action, targeted both the student population and the Centre’s staff, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and the role of genetic counselling in managing the condition.

The visit was characterized by a two-pronged approach: education and clinical testing. Health experts from RHIF led interactive sessions with pupils, breaking down the complexities of the sickle cell trait in a manner suitable for young learners, while simultaneously engaging staff on the management of affected children within a school environment.

“Awareness is the first step toward prevention and effective management. Bringing testing directly to the school, we are breaking the barriers of distance and cost that often prevent families from knowing their status.” Mr. Kaweesi Charles Sam Director

Both pupils and staff underwent screening to determine their genotypes (AA, AS, or SS).

Teachers were equipped with skills to identify crisis signs and provide immediate support to students living with the condition.

The event fostered a dialogue on de-stigmatizing the disease within the local community and religious institutions.

Sickle cell disease remains a significant public health challenge in Uganda, with the Ministry of Health estimating that approximately 20,000 babies are born with the condition annually. Wakiso District, given its high population density, remains a focal point for health interventions.

The management of Assahaba Islamic Centre lauded the initiative, noting that such partnerships are vital for ensuring the physical well-being of learners, which is a prerequisite for academic excellence.

The “Time to Take Action” theme serves as a call to the government, private sector, and civil society to increase funding for SCD research and provide accessible healthcare for those living with the trait.
